How a Road Estimate Is Built

A road is built layer by layer, and every layer affects the overall cost. ACON Engineering measures the subgrade, subbase, base course, and asphalt or concrete surface using the same area, thickness, and tonnage calculations used in actual road construction pricing. We also include curbs, drainage, pavement markings, and traffic control based on your project plans. Each item is broken out as a separate pay item, so your estimate matches the format used for DOT and public project bids.

Road Scopes We Estimate

Each takeoff below is measured from your roadway plans and priced by pay item. Together, they cover the full road, below the surface and on top of it. You get one estimate you can bid from.

Roadway Earthwork

The roadbed starts with clearing, cut and fill, and grading to the design profile. The takeoff sets the earthwork volumes and the subgrade prep, so the ground is priced before the pavement goes down.

Asphalt and Concrete Paving

Pavement is the largest line on most road bids. The takeoff measures the asphalt by the ton and the concrete by the square yard, with the lift thickness and surface area your plans specify.

Base and Subbase

The pavement sits on a base and subbase that carry the load. The takeoff quantifies the aggregate by depth and area, so the layers under the road are priced to the section detail.

Gutter and Sidewalk

Curb, gutter, and sidewalk run the length of the road. The takeoff counts the linear feet and the concrete each one needs, so the flatwork along the road is on the bid.

Drainage and Culverts

Water has to leave the roadway and pass beneath it. The takeoff prices the pipe, culverts, inlets, and catch basins by size and length, so the drainage scope meets the plan.

Signage and Guardrail

Striping, signs, and guardrail finish the road and pass inspection. The takeoff measures the markings by the mile, the signs by count, and the guardrail by the foot, so nothing at the surface is missed.

Road Estimating Deliverables

The file lists the quantities by pay item, with asphalt tonnage, base volumes, curb and marking lengths, and material costs in editable Excel. Every estimate comes with a color-coded plan and a clear list of inclusions and exclusions.

Our 4 Step Road Estimating Process

We follow a straightforward process so you can submit your highway proposals on time. You work with estimators who understand asphalt paving and municipal roadwork specifications.

01

Send Your Plans

You upload your highway profiles, paving cross-sections, and state DOT bidding requirements. The team reviews your roadwork scope and sends you a clear quote.

02

Quantify the Roadway Layers

Estimators calculate the asphalt tonnage, aggregate base course square yards, and concrete curb lengths. Every structural layer is measured according to plan notes.

03

Apply Local Material Costs

Asphalt plant mix prices, aggregate hauling and heavy machinery hours use local zip code. Trucking and milling fees match project conditions.

04

Review and Delivery

A senior civil estimator verifies your material conversions and pavement volumes. You receive your final Excel spreadsheet and color-coded PDF layouts within 24 to 72 hours.

Industry Standard Road Estimating Software

Your plans are measured in RSMeans, PlanSwift, and Bluebeam, the tools built for paving and roadwork takeoffs. Each quantity is priced against current local rates, so the numbers hold.

Built for Road and Highway Contractors

Road estimates priced by pay item, from a US-based team with 15 years in construction takeoffs. You pay only for the work you send.

Priced by Pay Item

Your estimate is built the way road bids are scored, item by item. The format matches DOT and public bid schedules, so the numbers move straight into your submission.

Pavement Layer Accuracy

Your asphalt, base, and subbase are measured separately by depth and tonnage. Each layer is priced on its own, so the road section matches what the plans call for.

Full Road Scope

Your bid covers more than pavement. The drainage, curb, markings, signage and guardrail are quantified too, so the items that get left off other bids are accounted for.

DOT and Public Bid Ready

Your estimate fits how public roadwork is bid and reviewed. The pay-item format and quantities match agency requirements, so the bid holds up when it is checked.

Local Material Rates

Your asphalt, aggregate, and concrete are priced to your zip code. Road material costs shift by region and haul distance, so the bid reflects your own market.

Up to 60% Savings

You get a full estimating team for less than an in-house hire. You pay per project, with no salary, software, or overhead to carry between bids.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A road is measured in layers, from the subgrade up through the base and the asphalt or concrete surface. Each layer is quantified by area, thickness, and tonnage, then priced by pay item, the way road bids are scored.

Asphalt is laid in flexible layers and measured by the ton. Concrete is a rigid slab measured by the square yard. They cost and behave differently, and we estimate both for the road section.

A road takeoff covers the earthwork, base, paving, curb and gutter, drainage and culverts, plus markings, signage, and guardrail. Each item is listed as a pay item with its own quantity and unit.

Road cost is usually measured by the mile or the square yard, and it moves with the pavement type, the layers, and the site. We give you the figure for your road based on the real quantities.

Yes. We prepare estimates in the pay-item format that DOT and public agencies use, so your bid lines up with the agency schedule and holds up at review.

We work with road and paving contractors, highway and heavy contractors, and sitework contractors. We also serve general contractors, civil engineers, developers, and public agencies.

We prepare takeoffs in AGTEK, PlanSwift, and Bluebeam, and deliver in editable Excel, organized by pay item, with a color-coded plan. Most estimates are ready within 24 to 72 hours.
